Browser appearance


Note. Themes uploaded from the Chrome Web Store are not compatible with Yandex.Browser.

By default, Yandex Browser elements (tabs, SmartBox etc) are displayed on a light background. To select a dark or color theme:

  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Go to Interface.
  3. In the Color theme section, select the appropriate theme.
Restriction. If you have selected a dark theme and want the browser to to pick up only backgrounds that go well with it, enable the Use only dark backgrounds when the dark theme is enabled option.

Side panel

By default, the side panel appears when you hover your mouse cursor over the left border of the browser window. Use side panel to:

Enable side panel
  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Go to Interface.
  3. In the Side panel section, enable the Show side panel option.
Pin side panel

If you want the side panel to be always displayed in the browser:

  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Go to Interface.
  3. In the Side panel section, enable Show side panel and select the desired option:
    • pinned on all pages. The panel will be displayed on each tab.
    • pinned in new tab. The side panel will appear when you open a new tab.

Browser background

You can use the following media as a background:

To select a browser background:

  1. Open a new tab.
  2. Click Backgrounds gallery under the Tableau to the right.
  3. Select a photo or video from an album.
  4. Click Use this background.
Note. You can configure your browser to randomly alternate images or videos from your Background gallery once a day.
  • For one album. Select the desired album in the Backgrounds gallery and click Alternate these backgrounds.
  • For all albums. In the Backgrounds gallery, click Alternate in the All backgrounds section.
Start or stop animation

Animated backgrounds look great, but they can run down your battery. To avoid this:

  1. Open a new tab.
  2. Under the Tableau on the right, click and turn off Background animation.
Animation when the battery is low

When your battery is low, animation turns off automatically. If you want to continue playing animation regardless of how low your battery is:

  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Open Tools.
  3. In the Power saving mode section, disable the Disable video playing when battery is low option.

Playback in high resolution

Animations play back in high resolution by default. If this slows down the Yandex Browser beta version:

  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Go to Interface.
  3. In the New tab section, disable the Use high-resolution animated background option.

Problems with the browser theme

Background animation doesn't work

Background animation may not work due to the following:

Animation is paused
  1. Open a new tab.
  2. Under the Tableau to the right, click and turn on the Background animation option.
The video card driver is outdated

Update the driver for each video card that is installed on your computer:

  1. Click Start → Dashboard → Device dispatcher.
  2. Open Video adapters. A list of video cards appears.
  3. Right-click the name of your video card.
  4. In the context menu, select Update drivers.
Hardware acceleration is problematic

Try turning the hardware accelerator on or off:

  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Go to System.
  3. Go to the Performance section. If the Use hardware acceleration if possible option is on, turn it off. If the Use hardware acceleration if possible option is off, turn it on.
  4. Restart the browser to apply these changes.
An extension is blocking animation
  1. Temporarily disable all extensions:  → Extensions.
  2. If your animation re-appears, try going through your extensions one at a time to find the blocking one.
  3. Disable the problematic extension. You may want to let the developers know about the problem.
  4. Clear your cache so that the browser doesn't load a copy of the page that was rendered earlier and contains the blocked animation.

The background doesn't change on the Tableau page

Try deleting the File System folder in the browser profile directory and then check whether the problem persists. To open the browser profile directory:

Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10

  1. Open the file search field in Windows.
  2. Copy

    [%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Yandex\YandexBrowser\User Data\Default\] (without the square brackets)

    and paste it into the file search box.

  3. Press Enter.
Note. Microsoft Windows XP and Vista operating systems are not supported since April 2017.
